The Breed Street Rookies are comprised of Sound Art students ages 11 to 18 who came together with the intention of writing and recording original songs for this compilation. Under the guidance of their instructors Jeff Smith and Justin David, the Rookies learned the art of songwriting and composed the theme song "In This Together" as well as "One for All". Writing and rehearsing in an old synagogue on Breed Street in Boyle Heights, the group has gone on to play shows at the Heyday Media Group's Solstice Skyline series and a show at HM 157 in Lincoln Heights.  They've worked for a year and they have  developed a sound and an identity.  This project was inspired by Renee Travis of Heyday Media Group who approached Sound Art with the idea of creating an ensemble with the goal of being part of a compilation recording.

It's been a great year!

Congratulations Jeff and Justin, two of our most accomplished instructors.  Jeff and Justin are sharing the responsibilities of Program Management and Direction.  They are a power team for sure - and incredibly musicians.  Check out their bios and their online links.

Our Middle School kids are moving on! And this last year at Fairfax High School and Hollywood High School our kids from LeConte, Bancroft and Irving Middle Schools entered high school as the best musicians in the school.  They were able to play in any music situation that the schools had to offer, which of course, included Sound Art classes after school!  They played lunchtime concerts regularly and did any special events that the schools put on.  They came into their high school years as stars!  All the kids that studied with us in middle school could play more than one instrument and move around the band with ease.  Imagine entering your high school years already a hero! Talk about a reason to stay in school!
