Sound Art Summer in San Pedro

Posted: October 26, 2010

About a year ago Adam, a middle school student in Pacific Palisades, contacted us wanting to visit one of our sites, meet the kids, hear the music and get involved.  Adam is another passionate musician who gets just how meaningful making music can be.  We met, talked, connected and Adam came to meet the kids at Bancroft Middle School.

Fade in fade out - Adam just celebrated his Bar Mitzvah and made his love of music and Sound Art the focus of the event! He raised over $3500 for Sound Art! And, he will be joining Sound Art teachers in the classroom as an aid and mentor.

Adam. you are a shining example to us all of what is possible.  Thank you for your spirit, your dedication and your passion!

At the beginning of our music programs we ask our students if they have any experience playing instruments. One of our kids raises his hands and says he knows how to play guitar. So we put one in his hands. He's confused and can't figure out how it works. Why? He didn't realize that a real guitar was different from a controller for Guitar Hero.

So, shout outs to Sparrow Guitars. We're right there with you on the front lines.

Sound Art just completed an 8-week Band Ensemble program in San Pedro at the magnificent Warner Grand Theater right in the heart of old San Pedro.  The session was sponsored by Target and the Department of Cultural Affairs.  This is our 3rd year of working with DCA.  The classes were held in the belly of the old theater and the kids are loving it.  The band, The Pedronettes, gave a concert at the Grand Annex next door - a fantastic space for music, theater and art appreciation.  Thanks goes to Taran Schindler, the Executive Director of the Grand Annex.  The kids ROCKED it!  All the families showed up and demanded encores.  A great time was had by all.  San Pedro is a fantastic part of LA - I encourage you all to take a look!

Our Middle School kids are moving on! And this last year at Fairfax High School and Hollywood High School our kids from LeConte, Bancroft and Irving Middle Schools entered high school as the best musicians in the school.  They were able to play in any music situation that the schools had to offer, which of course, included Sound Art classes after school!  They played lunchtime concerts regularly and did any special events that the schools put on.  They came into their high school years as stars!  All the kids that studied with us in middle school could play more than one instrument and move around the band with ease.  Imagine entering your high school years already a hero! Talk about a reason to stay in school!
